Perfect Steelheading conditions.
November 10-17, 2006 John Day Steelhead Field Report:
 |
Fishing for Steelhead on the
John Day has been picking up despite tsunami rains throughout
Oregon , the
John Day was not effected by flooding. Water temperature has been ideal in the low to mid 40’s and water flows have ranged between 500 – 700 cfs.
This last week has given our clients four to six grabs per angler, resulting in two to three fish hooked and yielding between one and three steelhead to the beach, per day, per rod. Since November 10th, our best day has been five landed and our slowest day was one lively steelhead lost.

Highlights of the week were; angler Joe Ballard skated flies through a few runs and raised two different Steelhead to the fly just to watch them boil. In addition his fishing partner Lee Resconi and him hooked a double in the first run of the day! This is the third time these guys have pulled a double on the
John Day ! They have been on trips every year since 2002. Another highlight was angler William had a steelhead make a screaming run only to lose the beast to a bent out hook!

The most productive fly has been a black or purple leech on a floating line or intermediate sink tip. The Steelhead have been chrome bright and aggressive, averaging 6-8 lbs. Nearly all are wild with the occasional hatchery stray. I have included some but not all of the photos from the week. I hope you enjoy the report and I have a few open days left in late November and early December.
Cheers.....Marty and Mia
