2008 Sandy River Steelhead Report 6

On the first day out last week, I guided a single angler and we came up empty handed, even though we put in a long and good day on the water. It was a great day to be out and we did the long float from the privite launch. We fished all the way through the public stretch covering 10 miles of river. On the very next day I had one of the few opportunities to fish with a couple of buddies. We did the same float and fished three times as hard (three anglers vs one) and came up with the same results. Nada. Part of my love of steelheading and guiding for them is how tuff they can be. This challange drives me.

On the third day out, I taught Kevin, a new spey angler the ropes of a two handed rod. In short order he hooks two and lands one! The first fish was a summer beauty that ran and jumped. It was big and it shook the hook after an airborn display. Kevin got right back in the game and hooked up again. This time to fight a strong head shaker; it rolled and I could see it was a big winter buck. It sure fought like it was fresh. We got this fish close then it would go back out to the middle four or five burst. Kevin wasn't weak on this fish keeping solid pressure and he did an excellent job fighting this beast. We landed it and took a few photos with this native in the water the whole time.

Next weekend I will be doing a presentation at the Sandy River Spey Clave in tandem with Josh Linn. We figured we better spend a day on the water getting tuned up with our display for all of you attending. Our program is ready and I hope you will be able to make this event! We did some fishing too with good results. Josh lost one, Marcy landed one, and I landed one!  Scroll down to enjoy photos from last weeks action.
