John Day River Season Report for November 2007

The John Day River possibly has the best run of true wild steelhead in the lower 48 and the occasional hatchery stray that has consistently been taking our flies every year since I started guiding on it. There is no hatchery and no dam on the John Day River , thankfully there never has been. This fishery is the most reliable producer I have found to take a steelhead by the swung fly anywhere! This year has proved to be another great year on the John Day , very few days go by without action and other days due to the extreme variation in weather we work hard for the take of a prized John Day Steelhead. Rather than doing a weekly report this year I just wanted to compile some (but not all) of the photos from this season for you all to enjoy.

Many thanks to everyone that joined Ted, Mia, and me on the John Day this year! It was fun!

I had the pleasure to be a part of a four day camp trip to start off our season on the John Day . We explored some new steelhead water for a donated trip to the Native Fish Society. Not only was the trip successful in raising funds for the Native Fish Society but our exploration of new Steelhead water proved the abundance of wild steelhead on the John Day. We caught a bunch! There where many issues talked about pertaining to the future existence of the John Day Steelhead population. Some of the issues are future elimination of hatchery strays, legal use of bait, cattle damaging bank riparian and high water temperatures that prove damaging to the migration of the John Day Steelhead. Please help in keeping this wonderful river a native river and become a member of the Native Fish Society. They work very hard and an organization like the Native Fish Society is needed to stand up for and protect major issues pertaining to wild fish! Thanks. www.nativefishsociety.org

December can be very good fishing on the John Day . The weather needs to hold steady and most years it gets quite cold. My wife, Mia, and I, expecting our first child to be born sometime in December, had thought it wise to take a leave and nest in our house for the little critter to be born. We planned a homebirth. Mia and our dog Cedar love to bird hunt and stayed over with me on the John Day doing short Chukar hunts until the end of November. I came home on December 2nd. Mia had stocked up the necessary items and we waited….not for very long! On December 7th 2007 12:30pm Mia gave birth to a 19” 6lbs 10oz little girl! The homebirth went super well and we named her Tegan Loretta Sheppard. Mia and Tegan are healthy. Mia is recovering fast. We are very happy!

Thanks again for a great season everyone! Happy holidays to all!

Marty, Mia, and Tegan Sheppard
