Sandy River Steelhead and Yucatan, Mexico
April 5th, 2007 Field Report:
|
Hello everyone,
I have not sent out a report in some time but the way I see it, Mia and I have a pretty good excuse. After getting married last August we finally took our honeymoon! We spent almost the entire month of March in the
Yucatan . A few days before we left I had Lincoln Silver for a day on the
Sandy . Lincoln landed this absolutely sweet, wild hen Steelhead.
Lincoln won this trip through his high bid at the Cal Trout auction. http://www.caltrout.org/article.asp?id=191 for more info.

Our first week in entailed traveling to
Merida , living with a family and taking Spanish classes. The start of our second week Mia and I hopped on a bus and headed to
Campeche . Our goal here was to see the beautiful city, explore the Mayan ruins of Edzna and see if we could round up a guide for some baby Tarpon fishing. The ruins were fascinating, the city of
Campeches and its history of pirates and the wall they built to keep them out was very cool. The Tarpon fishing was a blast!

Even though we were here in the off fishing season and had a cold day (seemed warm to us), we had many shots at Tarpon. This is a technical place to fish and an accarate long cast helps for succuss even though the first fish of the day was caught with a 20 foot cast to a tarpon that rolled very close to us in low light conditions. I really enjoyed this type of fishing! the day after Tarpon fishing we took a bus south of town 5 miles or so and had some fun fishing with clousers from a jetty and dock at a local beach. Little yellew tail Jacks, and bigger Jack Crevalles were available and Mia and I had nonstop action for a couple of hours! The biggest Jack is pictured to the right.

After Campeche we went to Talum and enjoyed the change of the gulf caost to the Carribian coast. We lounged on the beach, went snorkeling, got a peek at the Tulum ruins, and visited one of the many Cenotes. We headed to Punta Allen and stayed at Posada Sirena. A nice cabana and affordable way to find bonefish. Sirena set us up with one of her guides and for two days Mia showed me how to catch bonefish. I caught a few but Mia caught alot! |

Well, its nice to be home. Oh yeah we bought a new home! We are now located in Washington near the Klickitat River in a small town called Appleton. Our contact info has changed (see bottom).
April 4th I guided Andy Thorson on the Sandy. Andy broke in his new Winston by landing this very fat wild hen! This Steelhead made one jump and took Andys line well into the backing. We landed it in the rapids way down below the run we were fishing. Nice to be home!
