Sandy River Steelhead
January 20, 2006 Field Report:

Thanks to the cold snap that hit last week we had to move our trips forward a week. My buddy Campbell Williams (photo to right) came to visit since I had a few days off. Even though it was bitter cold, and the chance of finding some willing Steelhead was slim, he talked me into getting out on the Sandy for a few hours of swinging some new fly patterns I have been working on. We got lucky to land this chrome bright winter buck on Friday January 12th.

Well, the cold stuck around for the week and in came a snowstorm. On Wednsday it snowed about 4 to 6 inches. I had Dennis Staines on Thursday and Friday, January 18th and 19th. We agreed to walk into a few favorite runs because of the steep icy take out deemed to dangerous to pull off the float. Everything felt really good as far as our chances at a Steelhead. By the end of Thursday we had not even had a grab but the weather started to warm up! |
| By Friday most of the snow had melted and this was our chance to finally float the Sandy under ideal conditions. Dennis went 1 for 2 and landed this very nice buck. (photo above) Both fish were very hot! Mark Bachmanns boat brought a Steelhead to the fly. Josh Linn was on a solo float and landed a very nice Steelhead! (photo at right) |

All the Best.
