John Day Steelhead
December 16, 2006 John Day Steelhead Field Report:

December 9th and 10th David Magaret (photo below) and son Nate (photo to right) had their first shot at steelhead fishing with a fly. Ted had the pleasure of teaching these guys the fine art of speycasting and fly presentation. Nate accoplished a feat that sometimes takes many days, if not months or even years to achieve. His first Steelhead on a fly! David was also rewarded with his first Steelhead! Great job guys! They hooked 4 landing 3.

On December 11th and 12th I had fun guiding two die hard Steelhead anglers, Ken Dayton and Daniel Stranahan. On our first morning Ken took an eager fish right on his third cast (photo below). Things looked perfect for the day but the fish were hard to find with the second fish not coming to the fly until the last stop of the day. With hard rains and warming weather we decided to explore another "beat". |
| This proved to be the right choice for our second day. We moved over 8 Steelhead to the fly. Even though we landed only three, the Steelhead were grabby and it felt as though we could hook up every cast. Daniel (photo below) landed the last fish of the trip, this big native buck that jumped twice, completely out of the water with a spirited battle. "We have take off" as |

Ken would put it. This is likely my last report for the John Day season. Wet warm rains have decommisioned the roads and the river level high. Look forward to Sandy River reports soon where the weather is wickeder, wetter and warmer with Steelhead that are bolder, bigger, and brighter. Thank you to everyone that spent time with Ted and myself on the water this year. We truely appreciate you all!

All the Best.
